The internet has made air travel much cheaper (inadvertently) because it has allowed customers the chance to select from various dealers the cheapest price for a certain destination. But before you do that there are something things you must know:

1. The price of airline tickets aren't static. They change according to the demand or according to the lack of it. As a result you will have to take gambles as to the price. But always remember that if you really need to go somewhere - play it safe and buy a ticket.
2. Airlines use one of the following 4 systems to manage their tickets: Sabre, Galileo, Apollo or WorldSpan. Land-based and Internet travel agents use a central system that gets updated from the four systems at different times. As a result of this you might sometimes find a price for a seat that is no longer available. This is why when you buy airline tickets, they always tell you that your reservation is awaiting confirmation.
3. Different systems sue different methods for finding cheap rates. This is why different companies offer different rates. This is why you should look at a number of companies before deciding on the tickets to buy.
4. Prices between different airlines differ because of certain factors such as the service offered on the flight. The lesser known airlines offer cheaper flights than the more well-known so as to get you to fly with them.
5. Contrary to public knowledge, airline tickets aren't priced according to the class. Economy class includes a range of prices. The airlines set aside a number of seats for a low price and in such a way raise the price slowly. If you are lucky, you might get a low-priced seat.
6. In chartered flights the price is reduced as the time of the flight comes closer. But airlines work differently (as explained in the previous factor) and so if you wish to travel long distances, book in advance to receive the cheap deal.
